Jo Malone is the epitome of style and sophistication; their products are high quality and absolutely stunning. The brand is mainly known for its unisex fragrances and spa products. Among these unisex fragrances are some amazing ones for men, but what are their best fragrances for men?
The House Of Jo Malone And Its Fragrances
Jo Malone is an incredibly popular brand known for its stunning fragrances, scented candles, and luxury spa products and lotions. As a child, Jo Malone always had a deep-seated interest in fragrances and she even tried to create her own from flowers in her garden. She began her career as a florist but also worked as a beautician in the evenings; it was her bath oil she would gift to clients that helped her business take off. She would get many requests for repeat orders, which led to her opening her first boutique in London in 1994.
The company has been ongoingly successful almost since it was founded and was subsequently sold to Estee Lauder in 1999 with Jo Malone remaining as a creative director until 2006. The brand continues to be successful and has stores all over the world.
Jo Malone’s fragrances are iconic as they are named after the primary fragrance notes; they contain one or two key notes and the rest of the fragrance is built around them. Wearers are encouraged to layer different Jo Malone scents for customization so each person can create an individual scent based on their taste. This is fairly unique to the brand, which is why their simple and easy-to-wear scents have always been such a hit; their success lies in the simplicity of it.
All in all, this is an iconic and stunning brand producing quality goods using only the best ingredients. Their fragrances vary significantly from safe to outright daring. Regardless of your mood or occasion, you’ll find something suited to you – below are the 14 best Jo Malone fragrances for men.
1. Myrrh & Tonka
Jo Malone’s Myrrh & Tonka is a wonderfully sweet cologne with an oriental feel to it. Made by Mathilde Bijaoui and launched in 2016, Myrrh & Tonka has been one of the most popular and immersive Jo Malone fragrances to date.
- Top notes: Lavender
- Middle notes: Myrrh
- Base notes: Tonka Bean, Vanilla and Almond
What Does Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka Smell Like?
This cologne opens with a smooth and sweet scent of myrrh and tonka bean. These two notes are represented in the title and they also make up for the majority of the scent. These two notes are sweet, smooth, and creamy and make a wonderfully immersive scent. The opening is soft and easy-going and perfectly sets the tone for this fragrance.
When we approach the mid of the cologne, the scent becomes slightly fresher. Hints of aromatic lavender start to appear and this adds a nice and refreshing undertone to the mix. The lavender does go away rather quickly as well, but in the time that it’s there, it smells great.
As the fragrance starts to dry down, the scent becomes a little sweeter again. Hints of vanilla, paired with almond make for a nutty, creamy and sweet scent that goes great with the creamy-sweet opening. From here, the fragrance doesn’t really change anymore, leaving you with an overall wonderful cologne.
Due to the sweet and creamy qualities of this fragrance, it’s best worn in the colder months. This is the perfect fall or winter cologne for any man and thanks to the smoothness, it will work great in both formal and casual settings. On top of that, this fragrance also has a seductiveness to it that makes it great for nights out or dates.

2. Orange Blossom
This is a wonderful floral fragrance with strong citrus undertones creating a fresh and vibrant spring and summer fragrance. All the notes blend together perfectly replicating the scent of orange blossom. This cologne is made by Jean Claude Delville and was launched in 2003.
- Top Notes: Tangerine Blossom
- Middle Notes: Orange Blossom, Lilac and Water Lily
- Base Notes: Iris and Vetiver
What Does Jo Malone Orange Blossom Smell Like?
This fragrance smells exactly as stated on the bottle; this is orange blossom through and through. Unlike other fragrances, this one has less of a development as most of the fragrance notes are present from the opening. The tangerine blossom smells almost identical to orange blossom; it’s a sweet and light floral note. We then experience orange blossom, which is supported by other floral notes giving the scent a powdery and sweet aroma with green and jasmine-like nuances. There is a subtle hint of citrus lingering playfully in the background.
The base notes are earthy and woody with green undertones; they contrast against the floral opening but rather than smother it, they accentuate it. The earthiness feels natural like smelling the orange blossom in the heart of nature. We retain the vibrant freshness and orange blossom aroma throughout the dry down.
Even though there is some development in the cologne, it all happens really quickly. This almost makes it seem as if the opening scent never really changes. This, of course, is partly true, but there is some subtle development. And even if you don’t notice it, you still have an incredibly good smelling cologne on your hands!
Overall, this is definitely a spring and summer fragrance and a scent worn best during the day. It’s easy to see why this is such a popular fragrance; it’s clean, it’s subtle, and it’s refreshing. There’s just no going wrong with this cologne, especially when you’re wearing it casually throughout the day!

3. Wood Sage & Sea Salt
This is a gorgeous scent that utilizes uncommon fragrance notes, particularly salt and seaweed. The perfumers wanted to create a sense of freedom and escape into nature; considering the popularity of this fragrance, I would say they were successful. Made by Christine Nagel, this cologne launched in 2014.
- Top Notes: Ambrette Seeds and Grapefruit
- Middle Notes: Sea Salt and Seaweed
- Base Notes: Sage
What Does Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt Smell Like?
The scent opens with a vibrantly refreshing crisp citrus note that has subtle fruity undertones. Soon after the initial spray, the grapefruit dies down making way for the sweetly floral, musky aroma that begins to take over. This mixture of citrus and fresh musk already makes this the perfect fragrance for a warm spring or summer’s day.
As the fragrance progresses, the saltiness the fragrance is named after becomes more apparent. The fragrance remains light as the salt drifts in, much like salt granules being carried through a light, warm breeze. We retain the fruity, floral freshness from the opening and the seaweed enhances the salt aroma and adds an aromatic edge.
The fragrance is built upon a foundation of sage, which is strongly aromatic with slight peppery and woody nuances. Each note, from the fruit to the salt to the woods, adds to this feeling of being in nature, whether it be on the beach or in a forest and the result is truly fantastic. This cologne is immersive unlike any other.
This is an easy scent to wear as it’s light and inoffensive with the freshness making it perfect for the spring and summer months. It’s also best worn during the day in casual settings but it can be layered if you need a richer scent for an evening out. However, even on its own, it’s absolutely amazing, especially on a relaxed, laid-back spring or summer morning.

4. Dark Amber & Ginger Lily
This is another gorgeous oriental woody fragrance with a huge range of fragrance notes. The balance of florals, spices, and oriental notes creates a universally versatile fragrance with an amazingly clear development. This cologne was released back in 2008 and is still one of the best Jo Malone fragrances.
- Top Notes: Ginger, Black Cardamom and Pink Pepper
- Middle Notes: Water Lily, Orchid, Jasmine and Rose
- Base Notes: Sandalwood, Black Amber, Olibanum, Patchouli and Leather
What Does Jo Malone Dark Amber & Ginger Lily Smell Like?
This fragrance has an aromatically spicy opening as the ginger takes the lead; ginger has a somewhat fizzy texture with citrus and woody undertones. This potent note is supported by fresh spices, which leave a slightly bitter aftertaste. Together, they create a fresh and spicy opening.
This bitterness doesn’t last long as the collection of stunning florals lying in the heart of the fragrance take over. The heart contains a mixture of pink and white florals, which lighten the fragrance with their sweetness and soapy freshness; they also have green undertones. These notes soften the opening perfectly without detracting from the intoxicating ginger and spices.
As we move into the dry down, we’re greeted with an array of rich, dark, oriental notes that deepen the fragrance and accentuate the masculine edge. The base notes are woody and earthy combined with the warm scent of the black amber. In addition, we experience a light spice and slight fruitiness from the olibanum and there is a hint of leather in the background.
Overall, we experience a spicy opening, fresh, sweet heart all supported by dark and rich woody base notes – the development is stunning. The oriental notes make this perfect for cooler months and can be worn during the day or evening for any occasion. Even formally, whether it be in the office or a wedding, this cologne will be great.

5. English Oak & Hazelnut
This woody spicy fragrance was released in 2017; it has few fragrance notes that are somewhat similar but have individual undertones. It’s simple but the result is fantastic. This cologne was made by Yann Vasnier and is loved for its simplicity.
- Top Note: Hazelnut
- Middle Note: Cedar
- Base Note: Oak
What Does Jo Malone English Oak & Hazelnut Smell Like?
Much like the name, the oak and hazelnut are prominent throughout the fragrance with the cedar acting as a support. The hazelnut makes an appearance straight away providing us with a soft and nutty scent with aromatically woody undertones. This is where we’re first introduced to the woodiness that continues throughout the whole fragrance.
In the heart, the cedar becomes more prominent; it’s a soft woody note and acts as a bridge transitioning the scent from the nutty hazelnut to the intensely woody oak. The oak is aromatically earthy and has a slight smokiness to it, which remains throughout the dry down and lingers for hours.
Overall, this is a deep and rich scent; considering how few notes it has, it has a surprising amount of character and a strong development. Maybe its simplicity is its best part. It feels so natural and easy-going, but it also has character and depth.
Due to the natural woodiness, fall is the best month to wear this but you can get away with wearing it all year round. This is another example of a Jo Malone scent that could be paired wonderfully with many other fragrances to create a custom scent.

6. Grapefruit
This is a gorgeous citrus fragrance released in 1992; it blends together citrus notes, herbs, spices and earthy base notes to create a well-rounded and complex fragrance. Grapefruit is one of the earliest Jo Malone fragrances and is actually made by Jo Malone herself.
- Top notes: Grapefruit and Tangerine
- Middle notes: Rosemary, Mint, Paprika and Jasmine
- Base notes: Vetiver, Oakmoss and Patchouli.
What Does Jo Malone Grapefruit Smell Like?
We are immediately introduced to the grapefruit, which is bitter and aromatic and has a vibrant crispness and a slightly dirty and fruity undertone. It is balanced perfectly with the tangerine, which is fruity and has a honey-like sweetness to it. The grapefruit is the most powerful note in the fragrance and remains prominent from the initial spray into the dry down.
As we progress into the heart of the fragrance, we experience gentle spices, aromatic herbs and refreshingly cooling green notes. Hovering in the background, we get a hint of sweet white florals, which feel light and delicate. These notes balance against each other perfectly preventing any one note from becoming too overpowering; meaning we still experience the grapefruit in the heart.
As we move into the dry down, the soapy yet deliciously earthy base notes support this fresh fragrance perfectly. They don’t smother the freshness but instead, they act as a support and accentuate the grapefruit even further and add depth and character. The fruitiness of the grapefruit is still noticeable even in the dry down and this scent lingers for hours on your skin.
Overall, this is a simply stunning fragrance that’s best worn in the summer. The fresh and clean scent is just perfect for those warm days, especially when you’re having a relaxing day off. This isn’t necessarily a formal cologne, but it can work nicely in the office. It just tends to work better in casual settings.

7. Velvet Rose & Oud
This is an oriental floral fragrance; it’s sweet with a hint of warm spice in the background. This cologne has a wonderful development and combines stunning notes that balance each other perfectly to create this gorgeous fragrance. Made by Fabrice Pellegrin, this cologne was launched in 2012.
- Fragrance notes: Damask Rose, Agarwood (Oud), Praline and Clove
What Does Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud Smell Like?
The fragrance opens with rose; it’s distinctly fresh with a soapy, powdery aroma much like fragranced soaps. It is also wonderfully sweet and floral with fruity and woody nuances giving the opening extra depth. This immediately makes for an immersive opening that shows you what this cologne is all about.
As the fragrance progresses, we begin to experience the other notes balancing against the rose and deepening the fragrance. The praline is intensely sweet with a subtle nuttiness to it and the clove adds a warm spice that lingers enticingly in the background.
The oud becomes more prominent as the fragrance develops; oud is an uncommon but stunning fragrance note. It’s woody and nutty with a rich, musty aroma that’s intoxicating and blends perfectly with the other notes. The oud seems to accentuate the nuances of the other notes, such as the spices, woods, nuttiness, and sweetness, but it also brings its own dark scent with it.
This fragrance starts out beautifully light and fresh and is soon transformed into a dark, rich scent, making it perfect for the winter and fall. This is a simple and safe scent; it can be worn during the day or evening and is really suitable for any occasion. It’s also very long-lasting so you can wear it to the office and it’ll still be hanging around ready for drinks at the pub after work!

8. Incense & Cedrat
This is an oriental woody fragrance launched in 2015 containing powerful fragrance notes that immediately take your breath away and provide a long-lasting, intoxicating scent. Made by Marie Salamagne, this incense-based cologne has been an amazing addition to the Jo Malone collection.
- Top notes: Elemi, Lemon, and Pepper.
- Middle note: Frankincense.
- Base notes: Cypress, Labdanum, and Benzoin.
What Does Jo Malone Incense & Cedrat Smell Like?
The fragrance opens with an unexpected crispness from the citrus notes, which leave a tart sourness in their wake. They’re immediately vibrant and powerful but are soon softened by the intense yet short-lived spices. Both the citrus and spices are breath-taking and soon die down leaving a sour, fruity, and spicy aroma hovering in the background.
In the heart of the fragrance lies frankincense; this is a complex note with various nuances and undertones. It has a smoky, woody, and spicy scent with a refreshingly green top note and slight fruity undertones. For just one note, it injects a huge amount of character – it also accentuates the opening fragrance notes perfectly.
We encounter a variety of typical oriental notes in the dry down; they’re sweet, warm, and aromatic with a strong leathery undertone. The fragrance so far has been surprisingly crisp and fresh; however, the rich and earthy base notes deepen the scent giving it a more masculine feel. Of course, there’s always the presence of the smoky incense, but unlike most incense-based colognes, this one is on the fresher side.
Even though this is a fresher take on the incense note, it’s definitely not a warm-weather cologne. The incense, paired with the earthy dry down makes it a little too strong for the warmer seasons, but all the better for the colder ones. You can wear this during the day or evening and it’s suitable for any occasion; so, whether you’re going to the office or out for a fancy dinner, you will turn heads with this scent.

9. Amber & Lavender
This is a wonderfully versatile fragrance for men released in 1995. It has an array of aromatic notes, herbs, and spices as well as earthy base notes designed to create an outstanding scent. This is another old cologne and once again created by Jo Malone herself.
- Top Notes: Lavender, Bergamot and Mint
- Middle Notes: Clove, Cinnamon and Lily-of-the-Valley
- Base Notes: Amber, Patchouli and Myrrh
What Does Jo Malone Amber & Lavender Smell Like?
The lavender is the most prominent note in the opening; it’s aromatic and clean with a fresh soapiness to it. Lavender is used very frequently in scents, hand creams and bath salts as it’s known to induce relaxation and calm. It has the same effect here; it’s soothing as the lavender is so potent in the opening. However, we have the addition of refreshing green notes and sour citrus notes adding to the aromatic freshness creating a stunning opening.
The heart of the fragrance contains several warm spicy notes; they are sweet and powdery, softening the opening and warming the fragrance through. In addition to this spice, we also experience a subtle hint of white florals that have green nuances and a subtle soapiness, much like the lavender.
In the dry down, the amber comes into its own creating a warm, sweet and resinous aroma supported by the earthy patchouli and spicy myrrh. The rich and oriental base notes create a smoothly rich foundation, in which we still experience the lavender.
Overall, this is a stunning fragrance with a refreshing opening and a warm, oriental finish. It’s fairly versatile so it can be worn all year round but it is best worn in the fall. It’s suitable for any occasion, whether it’s formal or casual. Wearing this to the office will be just as nice as wearing it during a fun day with friends.

10. Vanilla & Anise
With Vanilla & Anise, Jo Malone combines one of the most popular fragrance notes (vanilla) with an uncommonly used note (anise) and creates something wonderful. This fragrance was made by perfumer Celine Barel and was launched in 2009.
- Top Notes: Star Anise, Fennel, Neroli and Bergamot
- Middle Notes: Frangipani, Orchid, Cloves, Tuberose and Jasmine
- Base Notes: Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Vetiver and Amber
What Does Jo Malone Vanilla & Anise Smell Like?
This cologne opens with an herbal and spicy scent of fennel and anise. This scent is quite unique and different, so it does take some getting used to and it might not be for everybody. If you do like the scent of anise, though, chances are you love this cologne.
After the opening, some sweetness is added in the form of vanilla and tonka bean. These two notes are both sweet and creamy and actually work great with the spicy herbal opening. What you get is a rather unusual scent, but a very natural and great-smelling scent. Over time, you can notice a few more spicy notes, as well as some floral notes, but these stay in the background.
This cologne really is all about the anise and vanilla, and that scent will continue all the way through the dry down. The scent itself is sweet and spicy with that typical scent of anise. This makes for a unique fragrance; you’re sure to be the only one smelling like this.
With a herbal and sweet scent like this, you’re best off wearing this one either during the colder months or the transitional seasons like the spring and fall. This cologne is a little too strong for the summer, but during the other months, it’s great. It’s perfect for both formal and casual wear and can be worn either during the day or at night.

11. 154 Cologne
This is a woody aromatic fragrance launched in 2001 created by Jo Malone herself. This cologne is strongly spicy and aromatic with wonderfully citrusy and woody undertones creating a vibrant and masculine scent.
- Top Notes: Grapefruit, Bergamot and Mandarin Orange
- Middle Notes: Nutmeg, Lavender and Basil
- Base Notes: Vetiver, Patchouli, Musk and Vanilla
What Does Jo Malone 154 Cologne Smell Like?
This fragrance opens with beautifully powerful citrus notes that are a mixture of sour, bitter, and juicy sweet. There is also a slight hint of fresh spice hovering in the background, making for an inviting and refreshing scent that perfectly shows what this cologne is all about.
The powerful opening is somewhat softened by the notes that lie in the heart of the fragrance. We experience a mixture of aromatic spices and herbs with floral undertones. The nutmeg has strong earthy nuances, which adds a nice depth to the fragrance and introduces us to the earthiness of the patchouli in the dry down.
The base notes are woody and earthy combined with sweetness and musk to create an intoxicating dry down. The base notes are aromatic and the musk dries down to be sweet and powdery, which is combined with the strong earthy fragrance notes. We still experience the citrus and spices, which run throughout the fragrance.
Overall, this is a freshly spicy and aromatic cologne with woody, green, and citrusy undertones. This has a mixture of warm base notes and vibrant opening notes making it best suited for changes in the seasons, such as spring and fall. It’s best worn during the day but can be worn for any occasion.

12. Oud & Bergamot
Oud & Bergamot is another one of Jo Malone’s oud fragrances (together with Velvet Rose & Oud). This time, it’s a much fresher take on the note of oud. In fact, oud and bergamot really isn’t an often-seen combination, making this fragrance all the more unique. This cologne was made by Christine Nagel and was released in 2010.
- Fragrance Notes: Oud, Bergamot, Cedar, Orange, and Lemon
What Does Jo Malone Oud & Bergamot Smell Like?
Oud & Bergamot opens fresh with the note of bergamot at the forefront. The bergamot is fresh, bright, and zesty and makes for the perfect introduction. Added to the bergamot are some more citrusy notes, once again adding a sense of freshness to the mix.
However, it doesn’t take long for the oud to show itself. Oud is dark, rich, and bold, and it’s no different here. But because of the focus on the citruses in the opening, the oud is actually somewhat subdued. You can definitely smell it, but it’s not as strong and bold as it usually is.
As the cologne starts to dry down, the note of cedar makes itself known. The cedar is warm and woody and goes great with the oud. Together, they make up for the majority of the dry down. While the citruses are still there all the way to the end, the woods start to take over in the last few hours of this scent.
Overall, Oud & Bergamot is both dark and fresh. This combination is what makes this cologne so fantastic. Not only does it smell amazing, but it’s also unique. And because of the dark and fresh mix, this cologne can be worn all year long. Throughout the year, there also aren’t really any restrictions. It will work just as well formally as it will casually!

13. Lime Basil & Mandarin
Lime Basil & Mandarin is a fragrance created all the way back in 1999 by Jo Malone herself. After all these years, Lime Basil & Mandarin is still an amazing cologne from the house. With its fresh scent, this fragrance has always been a popular summertime fragrance, but there’s much more to it than just being a summertime freshie!
- Top Notes: Lime, Mandarin and Bergamot
- Middle Notes: Basil, Thyme, Iris and Lilac
- Base Notes: Vetiver and Patchouli
What Does Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin Smell Like?
This fragrance opens extremely fresh with lots of citrusy notes at the front. Together with the citrusy notes are a few fresh herbal notes. These add an aromatic freshness to the mix and make the overall scent feel crisp and soapy. And even though most of the notes work together to create something wonderful, you can actually smell all the notes individually.
This fresh and soapy scent will continue on for a long while. Some of the citruses do start to fade away slightly, but the notes of lime and mandarin stay present with their juicy, semi-sweet and fresh scents. Of the herbal notes, the note of basil is the most prominent, giving off its green and aromatic scent.
As the cologne starts to dry down, you can start to pick up hints of vetiver. Vetiver is a fresh and dry woody note that perfectly ties together all the notes of this fragrance. The lime and basil work especially great with the vetiver, leaving you with a gorgeous dry-down.
As mentioned before, this is an amazing summertime cologne, but it also works great in the spring as well. It’s refreshing, crisp, and aromatic, so it does a great job anytime the temperatures are on the higher side. Throughout these warmer months, you’re best off wearing this cologne casually, as it has a really laid-back feeling to it. It can work in the office, but most people imagine a fun get-together with friends when smelling this fragrance.

14. English Pear & Freesia
This is one of Jo Malone’s most popular fragrances, made by Christine Nagel; it was launched in 2010 as a unisex fragrance and is sweet, fruity, and has a strong focus on floral notes. In addition, it has beautifully rich base notes which balance with the florals, making this fragrance feel masculine during the dry down.
- Top Notes: Pear and Melon
- Middle Notes: Freesia and Rose
- Base Notes: Musk, Patchouli, Amber and Rhubarb
What Does Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia Smell Like?
This fragrance opens with the sweetness radiating from the pear and melon; both of which are fruity aquatic notes. The pear isn’t an abrasive note, it’s calming and refreshing but is still noticeable throughout the fragrance. The fruits are quickly supported by the florals, which are clean, powdery, and slightly spicy; the spice isn’t offensive, it’s light and just adds extra character.
The florals are delicate and highlight the natural fruitiness of the opening notes without allowing the fragrance to become overly sweet. They also add a nice freshness to the mix, once again ensuring that the scent doesn’t become too sweet.
The base notes are dark, rich, and earthy and each have a distinctly powerful aroma. The rhubarb, in particular, provides a stunning contrast to the sweet opening notes with its sour scent, strong green nuance, and slight spice. The other base notes add earthy woodiness and warmth, as well as the thick texture of clean musk. These notes deepen the fragrance without overpowering the pear or freesia; it ensures this stunning fragrance has an equally stunning dry down.
Overall, this is fruity, floral and sweet with perfectly balanced base notes to ensure this doesn’t feel feminine or sickly sweet. This is safe and inoffensive and is best worn during the spring and summer, particularly during the day. It would be best for casual settings such as going to the office and could easily become a signature scent.

Are Jo Malone Fragrances Worth It?
Jo Malone fragrances are fantastic, there’s really no other way to put it. The scents are easy to wear and very diverse so regardless of your taste or the occasion, you’ll find something you love. As each fragrance is based around a few potent notes, this makes the scents easy to layer for customization, which is unique to Jo Malone.
Seeing that this is an exclusive niche fragrance house, the prices are actually quite fair, especially compared to other niche brands. Although they cost more overall, the prices do vary significantly between scents so there is something for everyone regardless of budget.
However, if you’re unsure about committing to a higher-cost fragrance, you can always purchase a fragrance decant instead. Decants are smaller bottles (usually 5ml or 10ml) and sold at a lower price; this makes it much easier and more cost-effective to try out several fragrances to find your favorite before committing to a full bottle. If you’d like to read more about decants and the best places to get them, you can read this other article I wrote over here!
Overall, Jo Malone fragrances are definitely worth the cost and I would recommend trying several to find the ones you love the most. Don’t forget to mix and match these colognes either! There are endless amazing Jo Malone combinations!
